The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has welcomed the conviction of former Migori Governor Okoth Obado and two co-accused in the murder of Sharon Otieno, describing the ruling as a significant step toward justice and accountability.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, the ODPP said it was satisfied with the High Court’s judgment, which found Obado, Michael Oyamo, and Casper Obiero guilty of the 2018 killing.
“The Director of Public Prosecutions welcomes the judgment delivered today by the High Court in the murder trial of the late Sharon Otieno,” the statement read.
“The conviction marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of justice and accountability for victims of serious crimes.”
The prosecution body noted that it expects the court to impose a sentence that reflects the gravity of the offence and acts as a deterrent to similar crimes.
It emphasized that the ruling sends a strong message on the consequences of gender-based violence and high-profile criminal conduct.
Sharon Otieno, a 26-year-old university graduate, was 28 weeks pregnant at the time of her death.
The ODPP highlighted that her killing shocked the nation and underscored the urgent need for accountability in cases involving violence against women.
“She had a promising future before she was abducted and unlawfully killed in a crime that shocked the nation,” the statement added, pointing to the broader societal implications of the case.
The ODPP also commended the prosecution team led by Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Wangui Gichuhi, alongside officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), witnesses, and other stakeholders in the criminal justice system for their role in securing the conviction.
According to the statement, the case demonstrated the value of professionalism, coordination, and persistence in handling complex homicide trials.
Reaffirming its mandate, the ODPP said it remains committed to pursuing justice impartially and in accordance with the Constitution and the law.
“The Office will continue to prosecute homicide and other serious offences diligently, fearlessly, and professionally,” it stated.
The three convicts are expected to remain in custody pending sentencing, as the case now moves to the final phase where penalties will be determined by the court.
