Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi has condemned the attack on Kasarani woman Rachel Muthoni, who was set on fire after being doused with petrol in Mwiki, Nairobi County, in an incident that has triggered political reactions.
Sudi, who visited Muthoni at Kenyatta National Hospital where she is undergoing treatment for severe burns, linked the assault to rising political intolerance and issued remarks that appeared to direct blame toward allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
However, investigators have not established any link between political figures and the attack.
“I visited Rachael Muthoni in hospital, the woman who was doused in petrol for tattooing President William Ruto’s photo on her chest,” Sudi said.
He went on to issue a warning directed at political actors he associated with the region linked to Gachagua, saying: “Wamunyoro, you cannot escape accountability for this barbaric attack. Targeting someone like this is indefensible. Hata kama ni siasa, this is not the way to go.”
Sudi described the incident as inhumane and suggested those he referred to should take responsibility. “The brutal attack she endured ni ya unyama. Mr. Dorcas, hii hautaeupuka!!” he added.
The remarks, which appeared to reference political actors indirectly, come amid growing tension within Kenya Kwanza-linked circles as internal political competition continues to play out ahead of the 2027 election cycle.
Rachel Muthoni was attacked earlier this week in what authorities say is being treated as a serious criminal incident. Reports indicate she had openly shown support for President William Ruto, including through tattoos bearing his image and slogans, before the attack.
Police say the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has taken over the case to establish the motive and identify those responsible. No arrests have been made so far.
