Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai has broken ranks within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), calling for urgent internal reforms following the recent absence of party leader Oburu Odinga from key party activities.

Oburu’s failure to attend the ODM retreat early this week in Mombasa has sparked questions within political circles, even as party officials maintain he is in good health and will rejoin activities.

National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed was quoted in earlier reports dismissing concerns, insisting the veteran politician is safe and stable.

However, Alai has taken a sharply different position, warning that the party risks leadership paralysis if it does not establish a clear succession or stand-in structure.

“Wacha niseme!” Alai said in a strongly worded statement. “ODM must urgently start the process of looking for a stand-in party leader to replace Dr Oburu whenever he is not able to personally lead party activities.”

The MCA argued that the demands placed on Oburu, particularly constant travel and high-level engagements, could negatively impact his health.

He cautioned that continued pressure on the aging leader may have serious consequences if not addressed early.

“The top ODM leadership will kill Dr Oburu by demanding that he fly in choppers all the time, affecting his well-being, and even not live his age,” Alai stated.

His remarks come at a time when ODM is navigating internal uncertainty following recent political developments, with observers noting that Oburu’s absence from the high-stakes retreat has amplified concerns about continuity and decision-making within the party.

Alai further called for the grooming of a new generation of leadership, warning that failure to act could weaken the party’s future.

“A new party leader must be groomed now, or we fold the party and find a new vehicle,” he added.

The comments are likely to trigger debate within ODM ranks, as the party balances respect for its current leadership with the need to maintain operational stability.

While officials have downplayed concerns about Oburu’s absence, Alai’s intervention underscores growing pressure for a structured leadership transition framework.
