President William Ruto has said Kenya and France are strengthening their long-standing relations following talks held at State House Nairobi with French President Emmanuel Macron during the Africa Forward Summit.

Ruto noted that the two countries have maintained diplomatic relations since 1963 and continue to expand cooperation in key areas of mutual interest.

“Kenya and France have maintained strong diplomatic relations since 1963. We continue to deepen this partnership in areas of shared interest for the benefit of the people of both nations,” Ruto said.

He added that the decision to host the Africa Forward Summit in Kenya, the first time it is being held in a non-Francophone African country, reflects growing trust and engagement between the two nations.

According to him, the summit marks “a significant step towards a more balanced, action-oriented and results-driven partnership.”

The talks at State House Nairobi, held with President Emmanuel Macron, were followed by the signing of 11 agreements covering multiple sectors of cooperation.

Among the key projects agreed upon is the modernisation of the Nairobi Central Station to Embakasi Rail Line 5, aimed at improving urban transport and easing congestion in the capital.

Energy cooperation also featured in the agreements, including collaboration on the peaceful use of nuclear energy and the development of sustainable aviation fuel to support cleaner transport systems.

In the agricultural sector, the two countries agreed to promote Kenya’s purple tea in international markets as part of efforts to boost exports and support farmers.

Other areas of cooperation include the modernisation of meteorological services to improve weather forecasting and climate preparedness, and the expansion of container terminal capacity at Kenyan ports to strengthen trade logistics.

The blue economy and fisheries sector is also included in the agreements, with both sides committing to support sustainable use of marine resources and coastal development.

Digital transformation formed part of the discussions, with Kenya and France agreeing to work together on expanding digital infrastructure and supporting innovation.

French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit comes at a time when France is seeking to reset its engagement with African countries through partnerships focused on investment, technology, and development.

The signed agreements are expected to guide bilateral cooperation in the coming years, with implementation set to be handled through joint technical teams from both governments.

The Africa Forward Summit continues in Nairobi, bringing together leaders and delegations from different countries to discuss trade, investment, and development priorities across the continent.
