Fresh details have emerged surrounding the fatal helicopter crash that claimed the life of Emurua Dikirr MP Johanna Ngeno, with a young eyewitness from Mosop now raising concerns over how crucial evidence from the scene is being handled.
Brian Kipkogei, a resident of Chepkiep in Mosop, Nandi County, has come forward as the individual who recorded the last moments of the ill-fated helicopter before it crashed.
According to Kipkogei, he captured both photos and videos as the aircraft briefly landed and later took off, moments before it came tumbling down, killing all those on board.
The crash, which occurred earlier this year, left six people dead, including the MP, and has since remained under investigation.
Kipkogei says he was among the first people at the scene and witnessed the sequence of events leading to the tragedy.
In his account, the helicopter appeared to take off normally before it suddenly lost stability seconds later.
His recordings are believed to be among the only visual evidence documenting the aircraft’s final movements before the crash.
However, Kipkogei now claims that his smartphone, which contained the footage, was taken by individuals involved in the investigation shortly after the incident.
He says he was assured that the device would be returned within a week after authorities completed their review.
More than two months later, Kipkogei says the phone has not been returned. He further alleges that efforts to follow up have been unsuccessful, with calls and text messages going unanswered.
In the meantime, he claims he was issued with a basic phone—locally referred to as a “kaduda”—as a temporary replacement.
The development raises questions about the handling of potential evidence in the ongoing investigation into the crash.
While authorities have not publicly addressed Kipkogei’s claims, the delay in returning the device could complicate public confidence in the transparency of the process.
The helicopter crash in Chepkiep sent shockwaves across the country, not only due to the loss of a sitting Member of Parliament but also because of the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Investigators have yet to release a comprehensive report detailing the cause of the crash.
