Former Law Society of Kenya President Faith Odhiambo has condemned the attack on Rachel Wandeto, who was set ablaze by unknown assailants in Kasarani, Nairobi, in an incident that has triggered public outrage and renewed concern over rising violence against women.

Wandeto, who suffered severe burn injuries, is receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital where she remains in critical condition. Police say investigations into the incident are ongoing as they pursue those behind the attack.

In her statement, Odhiambo described the incident as a grave violation of human dignity and constitutional rights, citing protections guaranteed under the Constitution.

“I condemn the heinous act of violence against Rachel Wandeto who was set ablaze in Kasarani. Such brutality is not only inhumane but undermines the constitutional promise of dignity and freedom from violence under Articles 27 and 29,” she said.

She warned that the attack reflects a broader and deeply rooted problem of violence against women, noting that legal and advocacy efforts have not been enough to curb the trend.

“This incident is a reminder that despite advocacy and policy interventions, women in Kenya face grave threats to their safety and lives. We must confront the uncomfortable truth that impunity and societal normalization of violence continue to enable these crimes,” Odhiambo said.

She called on the National Police Service to move swiftly, urging investigators to ensure those responsible are arrested and prosecuted without delay.

“I call upon the National Police Service to investigate and to ensure that all perpetrators are apprehended and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Accountability is non-negotiable,” she added.

Odhiambo further urged state agencies to coordinate their response, saying the victim must receive full medical and legal support while protective systems for vulnerable women are strengthened.

“All state agencies must coordinate to provide medical and legal support to the survivor while strengthening and providing protective mechanisms for all women at risk,” she said.

She cautioned that failure to act decisively would only deepen the cycle of violence and embolden offenders.

“We must act decisively because silence and inaction only perpetuate the cycle of violence,” she noted.

The incident has continued to draw condemnation from leaders and members of the public, with growing pressure on security agencies to establish the motive behind the attack and bring those involved to justice.

Wandeto remains under close medical supervision at KNH as investigations into the Kasarani attack continue.
