A sharp rise in knife-related attacks and mounting public anger over fuel prices dominated headlines on Friday, May 22, as fresh data and political developments pointed to growing security and economic strain across Kenya.

The latest report highlighted a worrying trend in violent crime, with stabbings emerging as a major threat in both urban and rural areas.

According to government data, at least 51 knife-related incidents were recorded across 22 counties between January 2025 and March 2026.

Nairobi led in the number of reported cases, underscoring concerns about public safety in the capital.

Authorities linked the attacks to a range of triggers, including crimes of passion, domestic disputes, and violent robberies.

Crimes of passion accounted for the highest number of cases, followed by incidents involving robbery with violence and domestic disagreements.

Security agencies have warned that the increasing frequency of such attacks signals early signs of a broader public safety crisis if not addressed.

Even as security concerns grow, President William Ruto is grappling with a separate but equally pressing challenge — rising fuel prices.

The President on Thursday convened urgent consultations to address the escalating crisis, which has triggered protests and heightened economic anxiety.

Ruto, who was in Kwale County to launch a rural electrification programme targeting hundreds of households, acknowledged the weight of the situation.

His visit to the Coast comes amid fears of renewed transport disruptions, particularly a potential matatu strike driven by high fuel costs.

The fuel crisis has also sparked isolated incidents of unrest, with reports of property destruction linked to protests.

In one case highlighted in regional coverage, a vehicle was torched during demonstrations, reflecting the level of public frustration.

Political tensions are also simmering, with debate emerging over security decisions affecting leaders.

The withdrawal of security from certain public officials has drawn criticism, adding another layer to the unfolding national discourse.
