Where Do You Stand? Salasya Warns ODM Against Blurring Lines Between Opposition and Ruling Party

Mumias East MP Peter Salasya has called on the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to clarify its role as a credible opposition, warning that its collaboration with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) risks eroding public trust.

In a statement addressed to ODM, Salasya said Kenyans trusted the party to stand up for accountability, challenge power, and defend ordinary citizens when policies became burdensome.

“Kenyans believed in you. They trusted you to stand firm as the voice of accountability, to question power, to defend the ordinary citizen when policies became too heavy to bear. But today, many are asking — where do you really stand?” he said.

He criticized what he described as a contradiction in ODM’s approach, noting that the party cannot claim the role of opposition while appearing aligned with the system it is meant to check.

“You cannot speak like critics in public and act like partners in practice. That contradiction is exactly what is weakening trust,” Salasya said.

Highlighting the economic challenges facing ordinary Kenyans, including rising costs of living and new taxes, Salasya urged ODM to provide clarity.

“Kenyans need leaders who are bold, consistent, and unafraid to stand on principle — even when it’s uncomfortable,” he said.

He emphasized the importance of honesty in leadership, calling on the party to make a clear choice.

“If you are with the people, then stand firmly and hold power accountable. If you have chosen a different path, then be transparent about it,” he said.

Salasya warned that the current blending of opposition and government roles leaves citizens without a strong voice.

“Right now, it feels like the line between opposition and government has disappeared — and that leaves Kenyans without a strong voice where it matters most. Kenyans are watching. And accountability is not optional,” he added.
