From Kamiti Maximum Security Prison, Maxwell Kiptanui says his life changed permanently after what he describes as a brief act of kindness that later formed the basis of a criminal conviction he still disputes.

Kiptanui is serving a 30-year sentence after being convicted in 2021 for defilement of a minor. He insists the ruling was based on a misunderstanding and maintains that he is innocent of all allegations.

He traces his story back to 2017 in Rongai, Kajiado County, where he lived and worked as a website developer. He describes a simple life built around work, church, and independence.

During that period, he met Stacy, a neighbour and single mother raising her daughter, Joy, after the death of her husband.

According to Kiptanui, their relationship began as normal neighbourly interaction and later became closer as they shared conversations and occasional visits.

He says Stacy later expressed interest in a romantic relationship and suggested he could also act as a father figure to her child.

Kiptanui says he declined, explaining that he was not ready for such a commitment and preferred to remain just a neighbour.

He claims that after turning down her advances, their relationship changed. Visits stopped and communication reduced, and he began to sense tension between them within the estate.

The situation, he says, escalated in October 2020 during heavy rains in Rongai. He recounts that Stacy’s daughter, Joy, then 12, arrived at his home seeking shelter after being caught in a downpour while returning from tuition.

Kiptanui says the child was soaked and cold, and he allowed her inside briefly for safety. He states that he gave her a towel and his jacket, kept his door open, and spoke to her for a short time about school and her ambitions.

He says she stayed for about 15 minutes before he escorted her back home once the rain reduced.

The next morning, he says police officers arrived at his home and arrested him on allegations of defilement. He describes the arrest as sudden and says he was not initially given clear details of the accusation.

He disputes the evidence later presented in court, including a medical report and witness statements, which he claims were influenced or misrepresented. He maintains that he never engaged in any inappropriate conduct with the child.

The case proceeded through the court system and ended in March 2021 with his conviction and a 30-year prison sentence. Kiptanui says the judgment left him shocked and devastated, describing it as a turning point in his life.

He also says he was poorly represented during the trial and that the process moved quickly, limiting his ability to fully challenge the prosecution’s case. Since then, he says he has filed appeals, though they have not succeeded.

Inside Kamiti, Kiptanui describes prison life as difficult and isolating. He says he often reflects on the events of that rainy afternoon and continues to insist that his actions were misunderstood.

He argues that cases involving sexual offences require careful handling and thorough scrutiny of evidence to avoid wrongful convictions.

He maintains that his case is an example of how allegations can reshape a life.

Despite his imprisonment, he says he has not given up on clearing his name. He adds that he continues to pursue legal avenues in search of what he believes is justice.

“I am innocent,” he says, adding that he will continue to fight for his freedom and reputation.
