When Hard Work Isn’t Enough: Navigating Promotions Bias in Kenya’s Workplaces

In Kenya, job promotions are often seen as a reward for dedication and performance, but the reality can be far more complicated.


Beyond competence and experience, employees face biases related to gender, age, ethnicity, and connections. Sometimes, favoritism and even corruption influence who moves up the ladder, leaving hardworking staff overlooked and demoralized. 


Many employees struggle to understand why their efforts are not recognized, and navigating these hidden barriers can feel like an uphill battle.

"For almost eight years, I worked at the same company with dedication and patience. I believed that if I worked hard and stayed committed, my efforts would eventually be recognized. Every day I arrived early, completed my tasks carefully, and helped my colleagues whenever they needed assistance.


However, something strange kept happening. Every time the company announced promotions, my name was never on the list. Instead, people who had joined long after me were moving into higher positions.

Friends outside the workplace often asked why I was still in the same position after so many years.


I began questioning whether something was wrong with me. One weekend, I attended a small gathering with former classmates. While sharing stories about our careers, I finally opened up about my frustration at work.
