Workplace stress and abuse are growing concerns in corporate environments across Kenya.

Employees often endure toxic management, unreasonable workloads, and harassment that chip away at mental health, leaving many anxious, exhausted, and uncertain about their future.

Such environments not only affect productivity but also erode personal well-being, sometimes pushing talented professionals to the brink.

Jennifer's Story;

“I never imagined that my dream job in a multinational company in Nairobi would become a daily nightmare,” Jennifer shared with this publication.

“From the moment I joined, I was constantly on edge. My manager would belittle me in front of colleagues, pile on unrealistic deadlines, and criticize my work without offering any guidance. I started feeling anxious every morning before going to work. I couldn’t sleep properly, I lost appetite, and even small tasks felt overwhelming.”

Jennifer explained that she tried to hope for change, thinking things would improve if she stayed patient.

“I kept telling myself maybe it’s just a phase or that I needed to prove myself more. But nothing changed. The stress was relentless, and I felt like I was slowly losing myself. Every day felt heavier than the last.”

Realizing she needed help, Jennifer sought professional guidance.

“I reached out to a workplace counsellor who helped me understand that the situation was not my fault and taught me strategies to cope with stress and assert my boundaries. More importantly, I learned that leaving a toxic workplace was not a failure but a step toward reclaiming my peace.”

Taking a courageous step, Jennifer resigned and eventually found a new role in a different organization that values employee well-being.

“Now, I am in a workplace where I am respected, my work is appreciated, and I can focus without fear or constant anxiety. It’s amazing how much clarity and energy I have regained. I want others to know that no job is worth sacrificing your mental health and that seeking help can open doors to better opportunities.”

Jennifer’s story is a reminder that workplace abuse and stress are serious issues, but with support and decisive action, it is possible to escape toxic environments and reclaim one’s peace and professional fulfillment. Get The Full Story Here
