Kenya joined Ethiopia in commemorating the 130th anniversary of the Battle of Adwa, a historic triumph that preserved Ethiopia’s independence during the First Italo-Ethiopian War.

Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya represented the Kenyan government at the celebrations held in Addis Ababa on 1 March.

Speaking at the ceremony, Tuya underscored the enduring significance of Adwa as a symbol of African resistance and self-determination.

“The Battle of Adwa affirmed Ethiopia’s independence at a time of intense colonial expansion,” she said. “For Kenya, being part of this commemoration reflects our commitment to regional solidarity, defence cooperation, and the preservation of Africa’s liberation history.”

The Defence CS noted that the anniversary serves as a reminder that unity and collective resolve are essential to advancing peace and security across the continent, echoing the shared vision of the African Union.

She conveyed warm greetings to Ethiopians, congratulating them on the milestone celebration.

The event was presided over by Taye Atske Selassie, President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, and attracted defence ministers and senior officials from across Africa.

The ceremony highlighted the strategic lessons of Adwa, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and mutual support among African nations in safeguarding sovereignty and promoting continental stability.

Beyond celebration, the anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on Africa’s legacy of resilience and the ongoing pursuit of unity, self-determination, and collective progress.
