A past political confrontation involving the late Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ngeno has resurfaced following his burial on Friday, drawing renewed attention to a dramatic moment that unfolded during his wedding in 2018.

At the time, reports by the Sunday Nation detailed a tense exchange between then Deputy President William Ruto and then Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter.

The incident reportedly occurred during Ngeno’s wedding ceremony and nearly escalated into a physical confrontation.

According to the report, tensions flared when Keter arrived late at the ceremony but received a loud and enthusiastic welcome from sections of the crowd.

His reception reportedly irritated aides close to Ruto, who had arrived earlier and was already seated among other leaders attending the event.

The situation quickly turned confrontational when Ruto allegedly questioned Keter’s presence at the ceremony. Witnesses cited in the report said the Deputy President asked the legislator why he had come to the function.

Keter reportedly responded sharply, asking: “Are you the one marrying?”

The exchange created an awkward moment at what was meant to be a celebratory occasion for the newlywed couple. Observers said aides from both camps intervened quickly to prevent the situation from escalating further into a physical confrontation.

At the time, the standoff reflected growing political tensions between the two Rift Valley politicians. Keter had increasingly positioned himself as a critic of Ruto’s leadership, a move that had created friction within the region’s political establishment.

The resurfacing of the episode comes days after Ngeno’s burial, where leaders and residents paid tribute to the legislator’s political career and community service.

Johana Ngeno died on February 28 after a helicopter crash in Mosop, Nandi County. His burial on March 6 in Emurua Dikirr brought together national leaders, local politicians and residents who remembered him as an outspoken and influential figure in Narok County politics.

While the wedding clash was widely discussed in political circles at the time, the re-emergence of the story has revived memories of the sharp rivalries that once defined Rift Valley politics.

For many residents, however, the focus during the burial remained on Ngeno’s legacy as a vocal legislator and community leader whose sudden death shocked supporters across the region.
