Trans Nzoia County has completed the construction of the Kwanza Mother and Child Hospital, a specialised facility expected to strengthen maternal and child healthcare services in the region.
Governor George Natembeya announced that the hospital is now complete and awaiting official commissioning, describing it as a major milestone in the county’s efforts to reduce maternal and infant mortality.
The facility is equipped with modern medical equipment and purpose-built maternity wards designed to improve outcomes for expectant mothers and newborns.
According to the county government, the hospital will provide comprehensive maternal, neonatal, and child health services, including antenatal care, safe delivery, postnatal services, and emergency obstetric care.
Officials say the facility is intended to ease pressure on existing health centres, many of which have been overstretched due to rising demand.
Health sector stakeholders in Trans Nzoia have welcomed the project, noting that access to quality maternity services remains a critical challenge in many rural parts of the county.
Long distances to referral hospitals and limited specialised care have previously contributed to preventable complications during childbirth.
Governor Natembeya said the completion of the Kwanza Mother and Child Hospital reflects his administration’s broader commitment to affordable, accessible, and quality healthcare.
He noted that strengthening the health system is a key pillar of his development agenda, alongside investments in staffing, equipment, and primary healthcare facilities.
County officials indicated that once commissioned, the hospital will be integrated into the county’s referral network and staffed with trained healthcare professionals to ensure round-the-clock services.
Plans are also in place to link the facility with community health programmes to promote early antenatal attendance and skilled delivery.
The launch of the hospital comes amid national efforts to improve maternal and child health outcomes, in line with Kenya’s Universal Health Coverage goals.
Trans Nzoia County says it expects the new facility to play a central role in safeguarding the health of mothers and children while improving overall healthcare delivery in the region.
