Nairobi was spared a potentially devastating terror attack after Kenyan security agencies intercepted plans by the terrorist group Al-Shabaab, Counter Terrorism Policing Kenya confirmed.
The foiled plot was uncovered following months of covert surveillance and intelligence operations targeting a terror network based in the Dadaab refugee camps.
Authorities recovered a significant cache of arms and ammunition, including 600 bullets, pistols, grenades, explosives, and illegal drugs.
The materials were reportedly intended for attacks across the capital, with targets yet to be fully disclosed.
Security officials also revealed that the group had considered kidnapping foreign nationals and hijacking vehicles as part of their operation.
“The terrorists had planned to strike during the holy month of Ramadhan, aiming to cause mass casualties,” Counter Terrorism Policing Kenya stated on X. “Thanks to the diligence of our young men and women in the security sector, Nairobi remains safe.”
The operation highlights the continued threat posed by Al-Shabaab, which has in the past carried out deadly attacks in Nairobi and other urban centers.
Kenyan authorities have increasingly relied on intelligence-led strategies to disrupt such plots before they materialize, combining surveillance, informant networks, and inter-agency coordination.
Security agencies are now conducting follow-up operations to apprehend individuals linked to the terror network and to prevent any retaliatory attempts.
Citizens have been urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to authorities.
