A supposed Russian national has sparked outrage after allegedly recording and sharing sexually explicit videos of women in Ghana without their consent.
Reports suggest the individual has engaged in similar unlawful activities in other countries, including Kenya, raising concerns over cross-border cyber sexual crimes.
Ghanaian authorities say the acts violate privacy, dignity, and local laws, prompting urgent diplomatic engagement with Russia.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Russian Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Sergei Berdnikov, was summoned on Tuesday, 17th February, following instructions from the Honourable Minister for Foreign Affairs.
The meeting aimed to express Ghana’s strong displeasure over the violation of the privacy and dignity of the victims and to seek Russia’s cooperation in pursuing justice.
In a statement, the Ministry noted that the ambassador acknowledged the unlawful nature of the acts and the broader cybercrime implications.
He expressed Russia’s willingness to assist Ghana in the investigation.
However, Ambassador Berdnikov clarified that the nationality of the individual remains uncertain.
“The purported name circulating in the media is not recognized in Russia and instead represents an inappropriate or vulgar expression in the Russian language,” he said.
The ambassador also revealed that Russian authorities were investigating similar conduct by the individual in other countries.
He assured that the Russian Embassy in Ghana would share relevant information to support Ghana’s efforts to apprehend the suspect and bring him to justice, even in the absence of a formal extradition treaty between the two nations.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that Ghana would continue to leverage its bilateral relations with Russia while exploring all international tools and remedies to ensure justice for the victims.
“We remain committed to protecting the privacy and dignity of our citizens,” the statement read.
The incident has sparked public outrage in Ghana, with calls for swift action against perpetrators of online sexual exploitation.
Authorities are reportedly working closely with local and international partners to identify and prosecute the individual responsible for the unlawful videos.
