The National Police Service (NPS) has recovered 14 illegal firearms and 51 rounds of ammunition during coordinated security operations in Baringo and Turkana counties, marking a significant boost to ongoing efforts to restore stability in the region.

In a statement issued on Monday, the police said the recoveries were made through intelligence-led operations conducted as part of sustained interventions targeting the proliferation of illicit weapons.

The operations were carried out in collaboration with other security agencies and focused on areas long affected by banditry, cattle rustling, and armed violence.

According to the NPS, the recovered rifles are believed to have been in active use by criminal groups involved in violent raids that have disrupted livelihoods and undermined security in the two counties.

Authorities said the seizure of the weapons represents a critical step in weakening armed networks and reducing the frequency of attacks on civilians.

“The recovery of these illegal firearms is a major milestone in our continued efforts to protect lives, property, and livelihoods,” the police said, reaffirming their determination to sustain pressure against the possession and use of illicit weapons.

Baringo and Turkana counties have for years experienced cycles of insecurity driven largely by the availability of illegal firearms, often linked to cattle rustling and retaliatory attacks between communities.

Security officials say disarmament remains central to long-term peace in the region.

The National Police Service also called on residents to support security operations by sharing information that could aid law enforcement, noting that community cooperation is vital to the success of intelligence-led policing.

The agency warned that individuals found in possession of illegal firearms will face prosecution in accordance with the law.

Authorities said similar operations will continue in other hotspot areas as part of a broader national strategy to curb armed crime and enhance public safety across the country.
