“Pick a Side” – Kuria Tells Sifuna After ODM Strips Him of SG Role

Former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has weighed in on the removal of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General, describing the move as part of a broader political realignment ahead of the 2027 General Election.

ODM’s National Executive Committee (NEC), meeting in Mombasa, resolved to relieve Sifuna of his duties with immediate effect.

The party announced that Deputy Secretary General Catherine Omanyo will act in the position until a substantive office holder is elected.

Reacting to the development on X, Kuria framed the decision within what he termed an emerging “bipolar” political contest in Kenya.

He argued that the 2027 election will be “mainly a mainstream politics game” and predicted it will be the most sharply divided race in the country’s 35-year multiparty history.

“There will be no option of driving on the service lane,” Kuria stated. “All vehicles will be driven on either side of the tarmac.”

Kuria suggested that political actors will be compelled to align themselves with one of two dominant camps — which he described as “Broadbased” or “Opposition.”

He said the evolving landscape leaves little room for neutral or middle-ground formations.

Drawing from his own political journey, Kuria said he previously made a similar calculation when he left his party leadership position to join the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

According to him, the political “referee has called teams from the dressing room to the pitch,” signaling the start of early alignments.

He urged leaders, including Sifuna and his allies, to “pick their jerseys from the two options available,” terming the shift “normal, healthy and inevitable.”

The decision comes amid ongoing national conversations about alliances, coalition reconfigurations and the direction of opposition politics.
