The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has officially commenced the prosecution of five individuals accused of murdering Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were, a former Member of Parliament.
In proceedings before Kibera High Court Judge Lady Justice Diana Kavedza, Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Gikui Gichuhi laid out what he described as a “narrative of treachery, greed and conspiracy” that led to the cold-blooded killing of the legislator.
According to the prosecution, the murder was meticulously planned and executed by individuals once trusted by the late MP.
Evidence presented suggests that a bodyguard, tasked with ensuring Were’s safety, allegedly collaborated with the accused, facilitating the fatal plot.
“The prosecution will present credible and cogent evidence to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the five accused persons jointly planned and orchestrated this heinous act,” Gichuhi told the court.
Investigators have reportedly compiled a comprehensive body of testimonial, documentary, and forensic evidence linking the accused directly to the crime. The prosecution also outlined the distinct roles of each suspect.
The third accused is said to have orchestrated the plot to conceal personal secrets, providing orders and funding while avoiding direct involvement.
The first accused allegedly masterminded the day’s events, while the second is accused of supplying the murder weapon and attempting to cover up the crime.
The fourth suspect reportedly pulled the trigger for financial gain, and the fifth allegedly abused a position of trust to deliver Were to his killers.
“My Lady, before this court today, we speak for a life that was brutally and unlawfully taken away. The deceased was not just a victim; he was an honourable Member of Parliament, a father, and a husband whose family depended on him,” Gichuhi added.
The accused – William Imoli alias Imo, Edwin Odour Odhiambo alias Machuani, Ebel Ochieng alias Dave Calo, Isaac Kuria, and Allan Ogola – are charged with murder in connection with Were’s death on the evening of April 30, 2025, around 7:40 p.m.
The prosecution team is led by Vincent Monda, Gikui Gichuhi, Peris Maina, and Christine Timoi.
The trial is expected to involve detailed presentation of forensic evidence and witness testimonies in the coming sessions
