A school employee in the United States has been arrested and charged after authorities alleged she engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a student, a case that has drawn national attention and renewed debate about professional boundaries in schools.

Alicia Hughes, 31, worked as a secretary within the Randolph Eastern School Corporation in Union City.

She was taken into custody following a domestic disturbance report that led investigators to examine her interactions with students.

According to local law enforcement, the incident came to light after her husband allegedly discovered her with an 18-year-old student, prompting police involvement.

While a relationship with an adult is not automatically illegal under Indiana law, the subsequent investigation uncovered allegations involving a separate student aged 17.

Prosecutors have charged Hughes with multiple counts of child seduction, a felony offense that applies when school employees engage in sexual conduct with students under 18.

Authorities say the alleged encounters with the minor occurred more than once.

The Randolph Eastern School Corporation confirmed that Hughes was removed from duties involving students following the investigation.

School officials said they are cooperating fully with law enforcement and emphasized that student safety remains their top priority.

Legal experts note that Indiana law specifically prohibits educators and school staff from engaging in sexual relationships with students, even when the minor is above the general age of consent.

The statute is intended to address power imbalances and protect students from exploitation.

Hughes was booked into the Randolph County Jail and is being held on bond as the case proceeds through the court system. Court records indicate that further hearings are expected in the coming weeks.

The case has sparked public discussion about professional conduct standards and safeguarding measures within school environments.
