Detectives have arrested two suspected traffickers and recovered 250 grammes of heroin in a targeted anti-narcotics operation in Nyali, Mombasa, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has said.

In a statement on X, the DCI said the operation was led by its Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) based in Mombasa and was triggered by credible intelligence linking the suspects to both drug trafficking and child trafficking networks.

The raid was carried out at Maweni Estate, Nyali, where officers searched a house believed to be used to facilitate illicit activities.

During the search, detectives recovered three sachets of heroin, weighing a total of 250 grammes.

Two suspects, identified as Amir Latf and Ruhman Abubakar, were arrested at the scene. Authorities say the arrest followed close surveillance and intelligence gathering aimed at dismantling organised criminal operations in the coastal region.

According to preliminary investigations, the suspects are not only involved in the trafficking of narcotics but are also allegedly linked to child trafficking activities spanning Mombasa, Malindi and Nairobi. Investigators believe the network exploits vulnerable children while using drug trafficking proceeds to finance its operations.

The DCI said the suspects are currently in custody and are undergoing processing ahead of their arraignment in court. Further investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest additional members of the network and to establish the full extent of the alleged crimes.

The latest arrest comes amid heightened security operations targeting drug abuse and human trafficking, which authorities say remain major social and security challenges, particularly in urban and coastal areas.

The DCI reiterated its commitment to intelligence-led operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks, curbing the flow of narcotics, and protecting children and other vulnerable groups from exploitation.
