Nandi Senator Kiprotich Cherargei has welcomed the Orange Democratic Movement’s decision to remove Senator Edwin Sifuna as the party’s Secretary General, terming the move a restoration of order within the opposition outfit.
In a statement on X, ODM announced that its National Executive Committee (NEC), meeting in Mombasa, had resolved to relieve Sifuna of his duties with immediate effect.
The party named Deputy Secretary General Catherine Omanyo as acting Secretary General pending the election of a substantive office holder.
Reacting shortly after the announcement, Cherargei congratulated ODM’s leadership, led by Oburu Odinga, for what he described as decisive action.
He accused Sifuna of undermining the party’s position and frustrating ongoing political engagements.
“I congratulate the Orange Democratic Party led by Hon. Oburu Odinga for bringing back sanity to the party by immediately removing Senator Edwin Sifuna as Secretary General,” Cherargei stated.
The UDA-allied senator further claimed that Sifuna had been sabotaging what he termed as a “broad-based government” and pre-coalition talks between ODM and UDA ahead of the 2027 General Election.
He said he had previously cautioned Sifuna over his public statements and internal party conduct.
“I warned Senator Sifuna severally against this habit of undermining the party; he ate more than he could chew,” Cherargei added.
Sifuna, who also serves as Nairobi Senator, has in recent months taken positions that appeared critical of certain bipartisan engagements, drawing mixed reactions within ODM ranks and from leaders aligned to the Kenya Kwanza administration.
The latest development signals potential shifts in ODM’s internal dynamics and its approach to cooperation or competition with the ruling coalition as early political alignments for 2027 begin to take shape.
