East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Winnie Odinga has detailed her work in promoting technology, digital literacy, and online safety in the region, while acknowledging the constraints faced by the Parliament due to financial shortfalls.
During an interview on Citizen TV on Tuesday night, journalist Yvonne Okwara asked Odinga to outline her achievements as an EALA representative.
Odinga responded by emphasizing her focus on advancing digital initiatives across East Africa.
“In my capacity as an EALA MP, I have been pushing for tech, digital literacy and penetration, and online safety. Unfortunately, the Parliament has been grounded for almost close to two years because it’s unable to fund itself,” she said.
Odinga noted that improving digital skills and expanding access to technology are crucial for the region’s economic development, particularly for empowering youth and safeguarding citizens from online threats.
She expressed concern that financial limitations have slowed the Assembly’s ability to implement key programs and pass legislation on these issues.
Odinga’s remarks highlight the urgency of securing sustainable financing to ensure the Assembly can fulfill its mandate and advance regional priorities, especially in the digital space.
Her advocacy shows the growing importance of technology in governance, education, and public safety, reinforcing the need for East African governments to prioritize digital transformation despite fiscal challenges.
