Nairobi Senator and ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has reacted sharply to Uganda’s pre-election internet shutdown, warning that such actions threaten the core values of democracy in the region.
In a statement posted on X, Sifuna cited recent events in Tanzania and the current developments in Uganda as a reminder that political activities must always uphold democracy, human rights, freedom, the rule of law, social justice, and equality.
“Everything else must be done within the framework and in accordance with these values,” he emphasized.
The internet blackout in Uganda, which began ahead of Thursday’s elections, has restricted access to social media, messaging platforms, and general web services nationwide.
Authorities argue the shutdown is necessary to maintain public order, but opposition leaders and civil society groups have condemned it as a move that undermines transparency and citizens’ right to information.
He also highlighted that the protection of fundamental freedoms is central to maintaining legitimacy in elections and governance.
The senator’s comments reflect growing concern among Kenyan leaders and observers about democratic backsliding in neighbouring countries during election periods.
With Uganda heading to the polls, Sifuna’s statement serves as a call for political actors to respect human rights and democratic norms, ensuring that the electoral process remains fair, transparent, and inclusive for all citizens.
