The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has successfully secured convictions against three wardens from GK Kamiti Maximum Security Prison, after a Nairobi court found them guilty of facilitating the escape of convicted terrorists, in a landmark ruling highlighting the State’s firm stance against insider collusion and threats to national security.
Willy Wambua received a KShs. 200,000 fine, or one year in prison, and an additional fine of KShs. 800,000 for organising a meeting in support of a terrorist group, with a default sentence of two years’ imprisonment.
The three wardens were convicted on multiple counts, including neglect of official duty, aiding prisoners to escape, and organising a meeting in support of a terrorist group, offences the court deemed to pose a significant risk to national security.
Prosecution evidence showed that on the night of 14th November 2021 and the following morning, the accused deliberately facilitated the escape of terror convicts Musharaf Abdala, who used multiple aliases, Mohamed Ali Abikar, and Joseph Juma Odhiambo.
The court found that Soi and Talengo’s willful neglect created conditions that allowed the escape, while Wambua actively aided the escape and facilitated an unauthorised inmate gathering at Condemned Block “A,” contravening the Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2012.
The convictions underscore the DPP’s commitment to enforcing accountability within Kenya’s security institutions, safeguarding national security, and ensuring that acts undermining public safety and institutional integrity are prosecuted decisively.
