A 23-year-old woman, Morme Wario, and a 50-year-old unlicensed practitioner, Haron Muthuri, have been arrested following the discovery of a lifeless six-month-old male foetus in Malkalakore village, Drib-Gombo.
The case has sparked widespread concern in the local community.
Residents reported finding the foetus wrapped in clothing, prompting police to respond swiftly.
Officers recovered the body and transferred it to Marsabit Referral Mortuary for preservation while launching an urgent investigation.
Police investigations quickly focused on Wario, who had been visibly pregnant just days earlier but was suddenly without a child.
Questioned by officers, she admitted to procuring the abortion, leading authorities to the unlicensed clinic where the procedure was performed.
At the clinic, Muthuri was found operating without registration. Police seized various drugs and surgical instruments, some showing traces of fresh blood, highlighting the dangerous and unhygienic conditions under which the abortion was carried out.
Wario received urgent medical care at Marsabit Referral Hospital before being taken, together with Muthuri, to Marsabit Police Station.
Both are in custody and await arraignment as investigations continue.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has called on the public to report illegal medical practices, emphasizing that anyone found operating outside the law will face prosecution.
Community leaders have also urged stricter enforcement of medical regulations to prevent further cases that endanger women and children in remote counties.
The incident has reignited debates about illegal abortion practices in Kenya, particularly in rural areas where access to licensed healthcare remains limited.
Authorities say they are committed to ensuring accountability and safeguarding public health.
