Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has announced the death of Craig, the world-famous super tusker that had become a defining symbol of Amboseli National Park and Kenya’s wildlife heritage.

Craig died early this morning at the park, aged 54, triggering an outpouring of tributes from conservationists and wildlife lovers across the world.

Born in January 1972 to the renowned matriarch Cassandra of the CB family, Craig lived a life that few elephants attain in the wild.

He grew to become one of Africa’s rare super tuskers, a class of bull elephants whose tusks weigh more than 45 kilograms each.

Today, only a handful of such elephants remain on the continent, placing Craig among Africa’s most treasured natural icons.

KWS noted that Craig fathered several calves during his lifetime, ensuring the continuation of his strong genetic line.

His descendants are now spread across Amboseli, carrying forward traits that made him both physically remarkable and behaviourally unique.

Beyond his massive tusks, Craig was widely admired for his calm and gentle temperament.

He was known to pause as tourists and researchers observed him, a trait that made him one of the most photographed elephants in Kenya.

His peaceful nature earned him global recognition and turned him into an informal ambassador for Amboseli and elephant conservation.

In 2021, Craig was adopted by East African Breweries Limited through the Tusker brand, reflecting his international appeal.

His long life, KWS said, was the result of decades of continuous protection, including anti-poaching patrols, close monitoring, habitat preservation, and cooperation with local communities.

KWS described Craig’s life as proof that sustained conservation efforts can deliver lasting results.

His death marks a significant loss not only for Amboseli but also for global wildlife conservation, as Kenya bids farewell to one of its most recognisable gentle giants.
