President William Ruto has reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to regional peace and democratic stability, pledging support to South Sudan ahead of its planned elections later this year.

In a statement shared after a high-level meeting at State House, Nairobi, President Ruto said Kenya is ready to assist in strengthening the capacity and institutional preparedness of South Sudan’s electoral agency.

He noted that durable peace and credible elections are critical to stability and shared prosperity in the region.

Ruto said Kenya views support for democratic processes in neighbouring countries as a shared responsibility, particularly in fragile post-conflict contexts.

He emphasised that credible and peaceful elections would help South Sudan consolidate stability after years of political uncertainty and conflict.

The President made the remarks after meeting South Sudan Presidential Special Envoy Tut Gatluak Manime, who delivered a special message from President Salva Kiir Mayardit.

The talks focused on regional peace, electoral preparedness, and Kenya’s role in supporting mediation and democratic transitions in the region.

Also present at the meeting were South Sudan’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Monday Semaya Kumba, and Tumaini Initiative Chief Mediator Lazarus Sumbeiywo.

The Tumaini Initiative has been involved in mediation efforts aimed at resolving outstanding political issues in South Sudan.

Kenya has historically played a central role in South Sudan’s peace processes, including hosting negotiations and providing diplomatic and technical support.

Nairobi is also a key regional hub for mediation under the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

South Sudan is expected to hold long-delayed elections later this year as part of its transitional roadmap.

However, concerns remain over preparedness, security, and institutional capacity.

President Ruto said Kenya remains committed to working with regional partners to promote peace, democratic governance, and stability across East Africa, stressing that instability in one country affects the wider region.
