Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has claimed that he and his team were targeted during a church service at Witima ACK Church in Othaya on Sunday. Posting on X, Gachagua alleged that President William Ruto had sent a “killer squad” to attack them.
“We are marooned in church being attacked with live bullets and tear gas and torched my vehicles. We ask Kenyans to pray for us to come out alive,” he wrote.
The incident, if confirmed, marks a serious escalation in political tensions as Kenya approaches the 2027 elections.
Details regarding casualties or injuries have not yet been independently verified, and local authorities have not issued an official statement regarding the claims.
Residents in Othaya and surrounding areas expressed shock at the alleged violence at a place of worship, calling for calm and restraint from all political actors.
Security agencies are expected to investigate the reported attack and provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding the incident.
