Former MP Kabando wa Kabando has waded into rising tensions within Kenya’s opposition, defending Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua against what he describes as “internal attacks” by colleagues.
Kabando’s comments, shared on X, highlight the fragility of political alliances and warn against infighting that could weaken opposition unity ahead of elections.
Reflecting on Kenya’s political history, Kabando drew parallels with past high-profile splits, including the fallout between former President Mwai Kibaki and his close allies, John Keen and Karume.
He noted that such divisions, even among trusted allies, have long-lasting effects on leadership and party cohesion.
Turning to contemporary politics, Kabando criticized some opposition figures, including Wambùgù Ngùnjiri and Gathoni wa Mùchomba, for publicizing grievances against Gachagua.
He described their actions as overly personal and potentially influenced by President William Ruto’s political strategy. “Some grievances are valid, but occupying public space to expose Rigathi risks undermining the opposition,” he wrote.
Kabando emphasized Gachagua’s strategic importance, calling him a “vibrant, indispensable cog” in countering Rutoist influence.
He urged colleagues to step back and focus on collaboration rather than internal disputes, warning that disunity could derail the broader opposition mission.
In addition to calling for political restraint, Kabando offered to engage constructively on national issues, including youth welfare and anti-drug initiatives, signaling that reconciliation and cooperation remain possible.
He concluded with a broader appeal for patriotism and unity: “None of us is perfect, but to rescue our motherland Kenya, all patriots should gather and pool together.”
