Police in Mombasa have arrested two suspected drug traffickers after seizing heroin valued at more than Sh4 million during a targeted operation in Utange, Kisauni Sub-County.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the arrests followed a coordinated raid carried out by officers from the Anti-Narcotics Unit, the Transnational Organised Crime Unit, and Kiembeni Police Station.

The operation was based on intelligence indicating that a residential house in the Barawa area was being used to store and distribute narcotics.

The suspects, identified as Tawaida Ali Said and Shamim Abubakar, were taken into custody after detectives stormed the premises, which was enclosed by a high perimeter wall.

A search of the house led to the recovery of several sachets of heroin hidden inside two bedrooms, suggesting the drugs were ready for distribution.

Further inspection of the compound yielded additional narcotics concealed underground.

Officers discovered another package of heroin buried in a hole at a corner of the compound, a tactic investigators believe was intended to avoid detection during police patrols and searches.

By the end of the operation, detectives had recovered a total of 1,346 grams of heroin with an estimated street value of Sh4,092,000.

Police also seized a digital weighing scale and a drying machine, items commonly associated with the processing and packaging of drugs for sale.

Investigators say the items recovered point to an organised operation rather than casual possession, with indications that the suspects were part of a wider drug distribution network operating within the area.

The two suspects are currently being held in police custody as investigations continue ahead of their arraignment in court. Authorities say additional arrests have not been ruled out as detectives pursue leads arising from the operation.

Mombasa remains a key focus for anti-narcotics enforcement due to its coastal location and role as a transit and consumption point for illegal drugs.

The DCI reiterated that intelligence-led, multi-agency operations will continue as part of efforts to disrupt trafficking networks and protect communities from the impact of narcotics.
