Journalist Alan Kasujja has criticised the Electoral Commission (EC) over delays and operational failures reported during today’s election, saying the situation reflects poor preparation by the electoral body.

In a statement shared on X, Kasujja said EC chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama and his team had “a lot of explaining to do,” describing the delays as unacceptable and damaging to the country’s democratic image.

He argued that the commission had sufficient time to plan for the polls and address foreseeable logistical challenges.

Kasujja noted that the EC had five years to prepare for the election, yet several polling stations reportedly failed to open on time.

He said such inefficiency undermines public confidence in the electoral process and raises serious questions about institutional capacity and accountability.

Reports from different parts of Uganda indicated late delivery of voting materials, delayed arrival of polling officials, and confusion at some stations during the early hours of voting.

While the Electoral Commission has previously attributed similar challenges to logistical constraints, Kasujja said timely elections are a basic expectation in any functioning democracy.

He further stated that any emerging issues on election day should have been anticipated and resolved swiftly, rather than disrupting voting and frustrating voters.

According to Kasujja, the situation amounted to a national embarrassment, particularly as Uganda seeks to project itself as a stable and credible electoral democracy.

By mid-morning, the Electoral Commission had not issued a detailed public explanation addressing the delays highlighted by observers and journalists.

The conduct of today’s election is likely to intensify debate over electoral reforms, transparency, and the operational readiness of Uganda’s Electoral Commission ahead of future polls.
