ODM party leader and Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga has marked what would have been Raila Odinga’s 81st birthday with an emotional message reflecting on the loss of his elder brother and longtime political ally.

In a post shared on X, Oburu described the difficulty of coming to terms with Raila’s death, admitting that even months later, it still feels unreal to speak of him in the past tense.

Raila Odinga, Kenya’s former prime minister and longtime opposition leader, died on October 15 last year.

Oburu recalled their close bond, saying they grew up “as twins,” sharing life experiences, laughter, and a deep understanding that went beyond ordinary sibling ties.

He noted that Raila was not only a brother but also his best friend, someone with whom he shared countless personal and political conversations over the years.

The Siaya senator also reflected on Raila’s contribution to Kenya, describing him as a foremost statesman whose impact on the country’s political history remains significant.

He said Raila’s ideas, struggles, and commitment to public service continue to resonate, even in his absence.

“It feels unreal to call you the late Raila,” Oburu said, capturing the sense of disbelief that still surrounds the loss within the Odinga family and among Raila’s supporters nationwide.

He added that while he deeply misses his brother, Raila remains alive in his heart.

Oburu concluded his message by marking what he called Raila’s “80 plus one heavenly birthday,” blending grief with remembrance and gratitude.

The tribute has drawn reactions from ODM supporters and Kenyans online, many of whom continue to reflect on Raila Odinga’s long political journey.

For decades, Raila was a central figure in Kenya’s reform movement, opposition politics, and national debates, leaving behind a legacy that remains part of the country’s political conversation.
