Fresh political tensions have emerged after former Azimio chief agent Saitabao Ole Kanchory weighed in on a legal dispute between Suna East MP Junet Mohamed and the Standard Group, warning that the case could expose uncomfortable details from the 2022 General Election.

Junet moved to court after the Standard published a story this week that described him as a “traitor,” a characterisation that has triggered sharp reactions within ODM circles.

The article framed the MP as a central figure in Kenya’s political battles over the last decade, while noting that some party insiders were openly questioning his loyalty to Raila Odinga.

Responding on X, Kanchory rejected Junet’s claim that the publication was defamatory.

He accused the MP of attempting to use the courts to rewrite the political fallout of the 2022 polls, arguing that public anger following Raila Odinga’s defeat could not be blamed on the media.

In his remarks, Kanchory alleged that Junet bears responsibility for decisions made during the Azimio campaign and said many supporters were left devastated by the election outcome.

He maintained that the MP should be answering questions about that period instead of threatening legal action against journalists.

Kanchory also declared his willingness to appear in court on the side of the Standard Group should the matter proceed to trial.

He warned that litigation could invite deeper scrutiny of campaign operations, including the handling of funds meant for election agents, an allegation that has continued to circulate in political discussions.

The dispute comes at a time when Junet is already facing sustained criticism from sections of the opposition, with claims — which he has denied — that he undermined Raila Odinga’s bid and mismanaged campaign resources.
