Former Deputy President and Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has revealed that several government officials have privately expressed their intention to join the opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on the timing of the United Opposition’s presidential candidate announcement, Gachagua said the coalition must wait for these potential defectors before unveiling its lineup.
“There are people in the government who speak to me at night and say they will decamp at the right time. We have to wait for them before unveiling our lineup,” Gachagua said.
He argued that announcing the flagbearer too early could limit the coalition’s ability to include other aspirants and consolidate support from like-minded parties.
Gachagua stressed that prominent figures, including ODM secretary-general Edwin Sifuna and veteran politician Oburu Oginga, have shown interest in running, and their inclusion is crucial for building a broad-based alliance.
“If we do it now, we might exclude people like our brother Edwin Sifuna. Even Mzee Oburu Oginga has expressed interest in running. We need to hear from everyone,” he added.
The DCP leader’s remarks contrast with Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s plan to announce the United Opposition candidate in the first quarter of 2026.
While Kalonzo aims for an early declaration to rally voters, Gachagua favors a strategic delay to strengthen the coalition and ensure inclusivity.
