Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has launched a scathing attack on the leadership of the National Police Service (NPS), accusing senior officers of surrendering command to politicians and allowing rogue units to terrorise civilians.

In a strongly worded statement posted on X on Friday, Gachagua directly faulted Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, questioning his authority and stewardship of the service.

He claimed the police had shifted from protecting citizens to becoming a source of insecurity.

Gachagua alleged that on January 9, 2026, a special squad of officers in civilian clothes descended on Kirinyaga County and commandeered police vehicles from Baricho and Wang’uru police stations.

According to him, the squad was under the command of an officer attached to a Murang’a County woman representative.

He further linked the same officer to previous incidents, including an alleged attack on Murang’a Senator John Methu in July 2025 and disruptions during recent by-elections in Narok County, where Gachagua claims his convoy was attacked.

The former deputy president said the officers, working alongside Kirinyaga County askaris, mounted a roadblock along the Sagana–Kagio–Kutus road and violently attacked his convoy using tear gas and live ammunition.

He claimed one of his security personnel was seriously injured, vehicles were damaged, and media equipment was stolen, forcing his team to retreat.

Despite the confrontation, Gachagua said he later addressed thousands of Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) supporters in Kagio after using an alternative route.

He noted that another group of uniformed officers reportedly observed the meeting peacefully without interference.

Gachagua demanded explanations from the police leadership, questioning whether multiple command structures exist within the NPS.

He called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the officers involved, terming the situation “deeply embarrassing” for the country’s security leadership.
