The family of a young man who was shot dead by police in 2013 is finally set to receive KSh 4.5 million following a protracted legal battle.

Lawyer Peter Wanyama, who took on the case pro bono, revealed that the High Court has issued orders of mandamus compelling the State to pay the family the full decretal sum.

The victim, described as the only son in his family, was killed by a stray bullet during a public demonstration over a decade ago.

Wanyama said the case was initially argued at the Court of Appeal in Kisumu, where he successfully secured a favorable judgment.

“It is a slow process in court but we will get some justice for the family,” he said. He added that he will deliver the entire KSh 4.5 million to the family without any deductions.

The lawyer shared the judgment publicly, noting its potential use in similar cases involving police killings.

“I am sharing the judgment for use in cases that have similar facts or in situations of killings by the police. WhatsApp or email me for a copy,” he wrote on X.

This development comes amid growing calls for accountability in cases of police brutality and extrajudicial killings in Kenya.

Advocates say such rulings set an important precedent for families seeking justice and compensation for victims of state violence.
