National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has expressed concern over the health of veteran Ugandan opposition figure Dr Kizza Besigye following reports that his condition has continued to deteriorate while in detention.
He said the opposition stood in solidarity with Besigye and called for prayers for his recovery, while sharply criticising President Yoweri Museveni’s administration over the treatment of political opponents.
The remarks come amid conflicting reports about Besigye’s condition.
The People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), the opposition party linked to Besigye, has claimed his health is critical and alleged that he was transferred overnight from Luzira Maximum Security Prison to a medical facility in Kampala under heavy security.
The party has demanded that his family and personal doctors be granted immediate access.
However, Ugandan authorities, including the Uganda Prisons Service, have downplayed the claims, insisting that Besigye’s transfer was for a routine medical check-up and that his condition is not serious.
His incarceration has previously raised concerns among supporters and human rights groups, citing reports of frailty and poor health during detention.
Bobi Wine’s statement adds to growing pressure on the government to allow independent medical assessment and transparency over Besigye’s health, as political tensions continue to simmer in Uganda.
