Witnesses linked to a vehicle captured near the scene of former Cabinet minister Cyrus Jirongo’s fatal road crash have told investigators they only learned the identity of the victim hours after leaving the scene.
The claim has become a key focus of ongoing inquiries by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
According to statements recorded by the DCI, the occupants of a white Toyota Probox stopped briefly at Eagol Petrol Station in Karai shortly before the crash.
They say they saw Jirongo leave the station heading towards Nairobi moments before hearing a loud bang.
The witnesses claim they did not immediately realise who had been involved in the crash.
After refilling their vehicle, they exited the station and briefly stopped near the accident scene at the request of a petrol station guard.
Due to darkness and poor visibility, they say they remained inside their vehicle and used their headlights to illuminate the wreckage.
The group told detectives they left once other motorists began arriving and traffic started building up.
They say they continued their journey to Keringet, arriving home around 6:00 a.m., without knowing the identity of the victim.
According to the DCI, the witnesses claim they later learned through reports that the person who died in the crash was Cyrus Jirongo.
This delayed identification is one of the details investigators are scrutinising as they reconstruct the sequence of events.
The DCI says it is verifying timelines, CCTV footage, and consistency in the accounts given to determine whether the witnesses’ actions align with their claims.
The DCI has assured the public that all witness accounts are being independently verified as part of a thorough and impartial investigation into Jirongo’s death.
