The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has revealed that a vehicle registered to a Nakuru County Assembly leader is part of ongoing inquiries into the death of former Cabinet minister Cyrus Jirongo.

The disclosure has raised public interest, prompting questions about how and why the vehicle became relevant to the investigation.

How the Vehicle Came Under Scrutiny

According to the DCI, detectives reviewing CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station in Karai identified a white Toyota Probox entering the station shortly after Jirongo arrived and leaving moments after he departed.

The footage placed the vehicle near the scene shortly before the fatal crash along the Nairobi–Nakuru highway.

Who Owns the Vehicle

Investigators traced the vehicle’s registration to William Mutai, the Member of County Assembly for Keringet Ward and Majority Leader of the Nakuru County Assembly.

The DCI clarified that the car is managed by the MCA’s wife, and that the investigation is focused on tracing usage and movements, not assigning blame.

The Account Given to Detectives

Statements recorded by the DCI indicate the vehicle had allegedly been hired out on December 11 to Denis Kipyegon Koech for a family trip to JKIA to receive their son arriving from the United States.

The family reportedly travelled back to Nakuru after midnight and stopped briefly at the same petrol station due to poor visibility.

What Happened at the Crash Scene

The occupants of the vehicle told investigators they heard a loud impact moments after seeing Jirongo leave the petrol station and later observed a bus dragging his vehicle.

They claim they briefly assisted by illuminating the scene with headlights before leaving as other motorists arrived.

Why the DCI Is Still Investigating

The DCI says it is interrogating the accuracy and consistency of the claims, including timelines, movements, and actions taken at the scene.

This step is standard procedure in high-profile cases involving multiple witnesses and public interest.

What Happens Next

The agency has assured Jirongo’s family and the public that investigations remain thorough and impartial.

Further findings are expected as detectives analyse CCTV footage, witness statements, and forensic evidence.
