Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has been ranked the second-best performing governor in Kenya’s 2025 Mizani Africa Performance Index.

The rankings, released on Monday, assess governors’ effectiveness in leadership, service delivery, and governance across all 47 counties.

Governor Ndeti responded to the recognition by dedicating it to the people of Machakos County.

“I’m deeply grateful for being ranked position two out of 47 by Mizani Africa. To the great people of Machakos County, this recognition is yours. I humbly dedicate it to you for your unwavering support, trust, and confidence in my journey of service,” she said.

Mizani Africa evaluates governors on several areas, including health, infrastructure, water and sanitation, early childhood education, agriculture, and local economic development.

The assessment also considers how well county leaders coordinate with national agencies and tackle emerging socio-economic issues.

Anne Waiguru of Kirinyaga County topped the rankings, with Ndeti following closely in second place.

Other governors in the top ten include Anyang’ Nyong’o, Lati Lelelit, George Natembeya, Gladys Wanga, Irungu Kang’ata, Joseph Ole Lenku, Gideon Mung’aro, and Mohamed Khalid.

Governor Ndeti’s office said the ranking reflects her administration’s commitment to delivering tangible results for residents.

Key projects have focused on improving healthcare services, upgrading county roads, and promoting economic initiatives to boost livelihoods.

The Mizani Africa report highlights the growing demand for accountability and performance in Kenya’s devolved government system, emphasizing that county executives are measured not only by political leadership but by the impact of their policies and projects on citizens’ daily lives.
