Two traffic police officers attached to the Diani Traffic Base have been arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) for allegedly demanding bribes from motorists along the busy Likoni-Lungalunga road.
The arrest followed an investigation launched after the commission received numerous complaints from road users and members of the public.
According to the EACC, motorists reported rampant extortion by officers stationed along the route.
During the operation, EACC officers found the suspects allegedly soliciting and demanding bribes from drivers without carrying out vehicle inspections or enforcing traffic regulations.
The commission said the officers targeted motorists arbitrarily, turning routine road checks into opportunities for extortion.
Those arrested were identified as Police Constable Agnes Longoet and Police Constable Alphanus Anayo.
The two were taken to the EACC Lower Coast Regional Office in Mombasa, where they are recording statements as investigations continue.
The commission stated that the arrests form part of an ongoing nationwide crackdown on bribery along major roads, particularly during the festive season.
This period is often marked by increased travel and heightened vulnerability of motorists to corrupt practices.
EACC said it is scaling up intelligence gathering and surveillance across essential public services, with a focus on sectors prone to bribery.
Traffic enforcement units have been identified as a key area of concern due to repeated complaints from the public.
The commission urged motorists to report any cases of bribery or extortion, assuring the public that information shared will be handled confidentially.
EACC maintained that officers who abuse their authority for personal gain will face legal consequences.
Investigations into the case are ongoing, and further action will be taken in line with the law once the inquiry is concluded.
