Environmental activist Truphena Muthoni stunned fans this month by hugging a tree continuously for 72 hours, a record-breaking feat she says required intense preparation and mental focus.

Speaking on Citizen TV on Sunday, the 22-year-old shared the unusual techniques behind her achievement.

Muthoni said the feat was more mental than physical, though the training was grueling.

“I walk for 42km nonstop. I do many tree hugs,” she explained, adding that controlling her mind was key to managing the long hours without breaks.

Her preparation built on previous endurance challenges. She first hugged a tree for 35 hours during Mazingira Day, then extended to 60 hours at a scouts’ camp.

These milestones helped her gradually increase stamina and practice staying focused for long periods.

Fasting and careful hydration were also part of the strategy. During practice, Muthoni drank plenty of water, but she abstained during the 72-hour event.

She told reporters she used mental control to handle bodily urges, showing how endurance is as much about mind power as physical strength.

Family support was crucial, she added.

“My family is supportive, they are proud,” Muthoni said, highlighting the encouragement that helped her push through the toughest hours.

Her record comes at a time when Kenya is intensifying tree-planting campaigns and promoting forest conservation.

Muthoni plans to continue similar initiatives, combining extreme endurance with advocacy to draw attention to environmental issues.

Her 72-hour tree hug remains a verified record, showing how focus, preparation, and determination can turn unconventional ideas into milestones.
