Trade CS Heaps Praises on Billionaire Businessman David Langat (DL) as K-Elec Launches First Locally Assembled TVs and Fridges in Syokimau

Trade Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui has commended billionaire businessman David Langat, popularly known as DL, for spearheading Kenya’s first locally assembled televisions and refrigerators.

The launch took place at the Sarin Export Processing Zone (EPZ) in Syokimau on Thursday, highlighting a key milestone in Kenya’s manufacturing sector.

Kinyanjui described DL’s partnership with Korean firm K-Elec, led by CEO Nam Kyo Jung, as an exemplary model of international collaboration benefiting the local economy.

“Through this initiative, Kenya gains jobs, knowledge transfer, and a clear demonstration of how private investment can drive economic growth,” Kinyanjui said.

The new facility will focus on assembling TVs and fridges, with plans to expand into beauty products in the near future.

The project reflects the government’s ongoing push to strengthen domestic manufacturing and reduce dependence on imported electronics, a long-standing challenge for local industries.

Several senior officials attended the launch, including Investment Promotion Principal Secretary Abubakar Hassan, ICT Principal Secretary John Tanui, Immigration Principal Secretary Dr. Belio Kipsang, and Kenya Investment Authority CEO John Mwendwa.

Their presence underscored the government’s commitment to supporting projects that stimulate job creation and industrial development.

The assembly plant is expected to create employment opportunities and enhance technical skills among Kenyan workers, strengthening the country’s industrial capacity.

While production figures have not yet been revealed, K-Elec officials emphasized plans to scale operations in response to domestic demand.

The project also signals confidence in Kenya as a preferred investment destination in East Africa, demonstrating the benefits of combining local capital with international expertise.

By launching the first made-in-Kenya TVs and fridges, DL and K-Elec set a precedent for future investments in manufacturing, showcasing how private initiatives can complement government efforts to expand the country’s industrial base and economic resilience.
