Nairobi Women Representative Esther Passaris has commended President William Ruto for renaming the Talanta Stadium after former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, describing the move as a “powerful acknowledgment” of his role in Kenya’s democratic reforms.
The announcement was made by President Ruto during Jamhuri Day celebrations on Friday, when he revealed that the stadium would bear Raila Odinga’s name to honour his contributions to the country’s reform journey and the establishment of devolved governance.
In her statement on social media, Passaris highlighted the significance of commemorating national figures through public landmarks.
She said, “Naming the Talanta Stadium after Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga is a powerful acknowledgment of a man whose courage, resilience, and vision helped shape Kenya’s democratic reform journey and the foundations of devolution.”
Passaris further emphasized that nations traditionally celebrate leaders who have driven progress through naming airports, avenues, and other public institutions after them.
She expressed gratitude to President Ruto for making a decision that, in her view, ensures Raila’s legacy will be remembered by future generations.
Raila Odinga, a veteran opposition leader, played a central role in Kenya’s push for democratic reforms, particularly during the post-2007 election period.
His political career has spanned decades, and he has been a key figure in the formation of coalition governments and the promotion of constitutional and electoral reforms.
The renaming of Talanta Stadium is the latest in a series of national gestures aimed at recognising the contributions of prominent leaders in Kenya’s political history.
