National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has issued a statement mourning the death of veteran politician Cyrus Shakhalaga Khwa Jirongo, who died in a road accident early Saturday along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway.
Jirongo, aged 64, was killed when his vehicle collided head‑on with a passenger bus at around 3:00 a.m. in the Karai area of Naivasha, Nakuru County. Police confirmed he died at the scene.
In his statement, Wetang’ula said he was “shocked and deeply saddened by the untimely and tragic demise” of Jirongo, describing the loss as one that reverberates across Kenya’s political community.
The Speaker noted Jirongo’s enduring influence as a political pioneer, particularly as a youth leader in the 1990s who helped reshape political mobilisation during Kenya’s early multiparty era.
He extended prayers and condolences to Jirongo’s family, friends, and associates, urging support and unity in the period of mourning.
“Honourable Jirongo leaves an indelible mark on the political landscape of Kenya,” Wetang’ula said, highlighting his role in national discourse and political mobilisation.
“His contributions as a trailblazer in his youth and later as a legislator and cabinet minister will be remembered by many across the country.”
The Speaker concluded by offering thoughts and prayers for Jirongo’s family and loved ones and prayed for peace for the late politician’s soul.
Jirongo’s political career spanned more than three decades.
He first entered national prominence in 1992 as the leader of Youth for KANU ’92, mobilising support during the country’s first multiparty elections.
He was elected Member of Parliament for Lugari Constituency in 1997 and served again between 2007 and 2013.
In 2002, he briefly served as Minister for Rural Development under President Daniel arap Moi.
