Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thangwa has ignited fresh political debate after alleging that several leaders from the Mt Kenya region were promised the deputy president’s seat to support the removal of Rigathi Gachagua.

In a statement shared on X, Wa Thangwa claimed that remarks by Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro amounted to a public admission that the lucrative position was offered as an incentive to push for Gachagua’s impeachment.

The senator argued that Nyoro’s comments merely confirmed long-held suspicions within political circles.

Wa Thangwa further alleged that more Mt Kenya politicians were quietly given similar assurances, with some allegedly beginning to “act like deputy presidents” even before any vacancy arose.

He referenced claims previously made by Kirinyaga Senator James Murango, who has spoken about certain leaders receiving additional security and special treatment.

According to the Kiambu senator, early political manoeuvres were already underway, including private meetings and lobbying efforts.

He cited Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata, saying he had held consultations with MPs led by South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro as part of early succession talks.

Wa Thangwa framed the alleged moves as evidence that opposition to Gachagua was driven less by principle and more by personal ambition, claiming the promises came from what he described as “cunning” political actors at the centre of power.

He challenged several high-profile leaders — including Moses Kuria, Anne Waiguru, Kang’ata, Kimani Ichung’wah, William Kabogo, Gladys Wanga, Junet Mohamed, and Osoro — to publicly confirm or deny whether they were approached or promised the deputy president’s position.
