Siaya Governor James Orengo has cautioned that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) risks losing its national appeal and becoming a regional party if it enters a coalition with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking on NTV on Monday night, Orengo emphasized that ODM was created to serve all Kenyans, not just a particular region.

“What Raila did, out of the realisation that a regional party could not answer the demands of Kenyans, was to strive to build a national party, which is ODM,” he said.

The governor expressed concern that an alliance with UDA, which is largely seen as having a strong base in Central Kenya, could weaken ODM’s national identity.

“I see an attempt to try and drive ODM to become a regional party. If we choose to work with UDA, ODM will most likely become a small party,” Orengo warned.

Political analysts note that coalition deals are becoming a common strategy in Kenyan politics, but Orengo’s comments highlight the risks for parties seeking to maintain a nationwide presence.

ODM has historically positioned itself as a party capable of appealing across regions, unlike some parties that primarily draw support from specific ethnic or regional bases.

As the 2027 elections approach, the warning from Governor Orengo may influence internal ODM discussions about whether a coalition with UDA would strengthen the party’s prospects or dilute its influence.

Party leaders are expected to hold strategic meetings in the coming months to determine the best path forward for ODM.

The debate underscores a broader challenge in Kenyan politics: balancing strategic alliances with the need to preserve a party’s national identity and voter base.
