Political activist and INJECT Party leader Morara Kebaso has raised fresh questions over the handling of Sh450 million that was returned to Kenya by the United Kingdom and Jersey Island authorities in April 2022.
In a statement shared on X, Kebaso recalled that the funds were part of proceeds recovered from assets linked to former Finance Minister Chris Okemo and former Kenya Power managing director Samuel Gichuru.
The two were previously implicated in corruption-related cases connected to Kenya Power contracts.
Kebaso noted that while the recovery of the money was publicly acknowledged, there has been little clarity on what happened after the funds were handed back to the Kenyan government.
He questioned whether the money was deposited into the Consolidated Fund or allocated to any specific public use.
“Where did the money go after it was faithfully returned to Kenya?” Kebaso posed, adding that the lack of public accounting raises concerns about transparency and accountability.
The activist’s remarks come amid ongoing public debate over the management of recovered corruption proceeds and the broader fight against graft.
Civil society groups have previously called on the Treasury and oversight institutions to provide regular, detailed reports on recovered assets and how they are utilised.
