Political Analyst Links Seth Panyako's Malava By-Election Loss to Funding Gaps

The defeat of DAP Kenya’s Seth Panyako in the recent Malava by-election has drawn scrutiny from political observers, with financial support emerging as a key factor in the outcome.

Political scientist Harman Manyora said the candidate’s loss could have been avoided had major leaders contributed the expected campaign funds.

Manyora outlined that several political figures had pledged financial backing that allegedly never materialized.

He stated that Eugene was expected to provide Ksh10 million, Natembeya Ksh20 million, while Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka were each anticipated to contribute Ksh100 million.

“These contributions could have significantly bolstered Panyako’s campaign,” Manyora remarked.

The Malava seat, vacated earlier this year, has traditionally been a competitive constituency, with party alliances and local influence playing decisive roles.

Jubilee Party’s candidate ultimately claimed victory, reflecting the party’s entrenched presence in the region and the continuing influence of established political structures.

Campaign financing remains a recurring challenge for candidates outside major parties or coalitions, especially in tight races where outreach and visibility demand substantial resources.

Seth Panyako ran under the United Opposition banner, emphasizing local development initiatives and infrastructure projects.

Despite his campaign efforts, observers noted that the lack of significant financial backing hindered his ability to compete effectively against a well-resourced opponent.
